“A team of medical researchers are on their way to finding a cure for cancer after the discovery of a an amazing rainforest berry which holds cancer fighting properties.
Scientists at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Queensland have used an experimental drug produced from the seeds of the rainforest plant, Blushwood tree (Hylandia Dockrillii), which exclusively grows in far north Queensland, to cure solid cancer tumors in pre-clinical trials.” (dailymail.co.uk)
This naturally occurring fruit contains compounds that began killing off cancer cells almost immediately when studied in the laboratory.
A single injection of the drug, called EBC-46, directly into melanoma models in the laboratory, as well as into cancers of the head, neck and colon in animals, destroyed the tumors long-term in more than 70% of cases, the study’s lead author, Dr Glen Boyle, said.
“The surprising thing for us and the thing that we don’t see very often is the speed with which this occurs. Usually when you treat a tumor it takes several weeks for it to resolve, but this is very, very rapid. There’s a purpling of the area, of the tumor itself, and you see that within five minutes and you come back the next day and the tumor’s black and you come back a few days later and the tumor’s fallen off.”
The preclinical trial was funded by QIMR Berghofer and the National Health and Medical Research Council and the results were published in the journal PLOS One.

While this experimental drug has been successfully used by veterinarians in about 300 cases, trials are still ongoing to prove its effectiveness in human patients.
There was no evidence EBC-46 would be effective to treat cancers that had spread to other parts of the body, known as metastatic cancers, Boyle said.
