Eating right is the most important thing you can do for a healthy life. Snacks and filling on empty calories is a bad step. Small changes in the snack routine can go a long way towards a healthy diet.
One example is yogurt – a healthy, excellent snack that is a great source of protein and probiotics which strengthen the immune system. You can even make it at home easily and in any flavor for a delicious midday snack.
Yogurt and probiotics
The main reason for yogurt consummation is the various probiotics found in it. They fight bad bacteria and infections in the body, and support healthy digestion. Store yogurt is good, but a homemade one is better because of the raw, organic contents.
Health benefits of yogurt
Improvements in gastrointestinal health and improved immune system are just some of the benefits of homemade yogurt confirmed by many studies. Choosing a yogurt as a snack means that you’re getting a big portion of vitamins, minerals, protein and probiotics. These nutrients are even better in homemade yogurt – that way you don’t need to worry about unnatural preservatives and chemicals.
Make your own homemade yogurt
Yogurt is simple to make, and extremely beneficial for kids because you avoid the added sugars found in store bought yogurt. These are the ingredients you need:
– two tablespoons of readymade yogurt (organic)
– one quart of organic milk (goat’s milk is the best)
– a food grade thermometer
– one bath towel
– one quart-sized mason jar
– one ice cube tray
– a wire whisk
– electric heating pad
– four-quart saucepan
Start by heating the milk in the saucepan. Let it boil slightly, then put it in the mason jar and allow it to a temperature of 110° (check the thermometer). Stir the yogurt in the jar and seal it. Wrap the jar in the heating pad and towel and leave it for 7-10 hours. Remove the jar from the pad and towel and put it in the fridge. The yogurt will form overnight and be ready to eat the next morning. Put fruit or spices to give it flavor in individual servings and enjoy your healthy snack!
